A Differential Temporal Interestingness Measure for Identifying the Learning Behavior Effects of Scaffolding

چکیده
Effective design and improvement of scaffolding in complex and open-ended learning environments, requires the ability to assess the effectiveness of a variety of scaffolding options, not only in terms of overall performance and learning, but also in terms of more subtle effects on students’ behavior and understanding. In this paper, we present a novel data mining technique that aids the analysis of scaffolding and students’ learning behaviors by identifying activity patterns that distinguish groups of students (e.g., groups that received different scaffolding and feedback during an extended, complex learning activities) by differences in both total behavior pattern usage and evolution of pattern usage over time. We demonstrate the utility of this technique through application to student activity data from a recent experiment with the Betty’s Brain learning environment and four different scaffolding conditions.

متن کاملMining Temporally-Interesting Learning Behavior Patterns
Identifying sequential patterns in learning activity data can be useful for discovering, understanding, and ultimately scaffolding student learning behaviors in computer-based learning environments. Algorithms for mining sequential patterns generally associate some measure of pattern frequency in the data with the relative importance or ranking of the pattern. However, another important aspect ...
متن کاملThe Sociological Effects of Peer/ Teacher Technology-Enhanced Scaffolding through Process Approach on Young Male vs. Female EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Knowledge
Gender is considered a sociological construct and investigating the role of gender in foreign language learning contexts is highly important due to the effects of sociological factors in learning. Therefore, the present study set out to explore the sociological effects of peer and teacher scaffolding through the process approach in a technology-enhanced environment on the vocabulary learning of...
متن کاملTechnology Mediated Instruction and its Effect on Cognitive Scaffolding, motivation and Academic Performance in EFL Context
Technology mediated learning brings together the users with shared interests. This method makes learners informally engaged in language learning. This study intended to investigate the effect of technology mediated instruction on cognitive scaffolding, academic performance and motivation. Employing a quasi-experimental research, 80 learners from two intact classes at Islamic Azad University, Os...
متن کاملIranian English Language Teachers' Perceptions of Monitoring and Scaffolding Practices of Assessment for Learning: A Focus on Gender and Class Size
Recent innovations in formative assessment have turned the spotlight on the implementation of assessment for learning in the classroom. Notwithstanding a considerable wealth of research on assessment for learning in mainstream education, few research studies in the field of language teaching thus far have touched upon assessment for learning. This quantitative study investigated Iranian English...
